THE VISION BEHIND LIHOVAR
Developers, architects, artists and technology partners come together to shape the future of Lihovar.
MARCEL SOURAL
Founder of Trigema
For Marcel Soural, Lihovar has never been simply a development project.

From the beginning, the ambition was to transform a former industrial site into a new piece of Prague — preserving its character while creating a place with its own energy, culture and everyday life.
What did you see in Lihovar when you first came here?
I saw a place with an identity that could never be recreated from scratch. The industrial history, the chimney, the original buildings and the character of Smíchov gave us something very strong to build on. The challenge was not to erase that history, but to give it a new purpose.
What was the ambition for Lihovar from the beginning?
To create much more than buildings. I wanted Lihovar to become a genuine part of the city — a place where people live, meet, eat, experience art and spend time. A successful neighbourhood needs life beyond its front doors.
Why combine architecture with art, culture and food? Because that is what makes a city interesting. Architecture creates the framework, but people need reasons to come, stay and return. Art, culture, gastronomy and public space give Lihovar its personality and make it relevant not only to the people who live here, but to the whole city. How important was Lihovar’s industrial heritage to the vision? It was fundamental.
We were inspired by places such as King’s Cross in London, where industrial heritage became the starting point for an entirely new urban district. At Lihovar, we wanted to follow the same principle in our own way — respecting what was here, while being confident about adding something contemporary.
What should make Lihovar different from other new developments in Prague?
It should feel like a place that could only exist here. I am not interested in creating something generic that could be transferred to another part of the city. Lihovar should have its own architecture, its own culture and ultimately its own community.
When will you consider Lihovar a success?
When people stop thinking of it as a development project and simply say, “Let’s meet at Lihovar.” That is when you know you have created a real place in the city.
